First public solution to demonstrate the benefits of deploying open source numerical computing in the cloud.
San Jose, CA – December 7th, 2010 – Equalis, the innovative on-line destination for the mathematics community, today announced that it has launched Math in the Cloud, the first public solution to demonstrate the benefits of deploying numerical computing in the cloud. Through this free application, available at www.mathinthecloud.com, students, researchers, and professionals can take advantage of the power of Scilab, the world’s most popular open source numerical computation platform, without installing or maintaining any software or hardware. In order to deliver this cloud-based solution, Equalis leveraged its on-line community and the open source contributions of W3 Scilab, developed by R. Sathish Kumar during his tenure at the National Resource Centre for Free/Open Source Software (NRCFOSS).
Equalis is driving the most vibrant and far reaching on-line math-centric community. It enables the free flow of ideas, cutting-edge research, open source technology, problem solving, and job opportunities for individuals and organizations with a common interest in math and math-centric endeavors. Equalis has a close partnership with Scilab, having joined the Scilab Consortium, and hosts a thriving community of Scilab users, including a dedicated user group and forum.

National Resource Centre for Free and Open Source Software (NRCFOSS) was set up in 2005 by the Government of India, Department of Information Technology based on a proposal by Anna University Chennai and the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing, Chennai. NRCFOSS works on free and open source software promotion with the twin objectives of bridging the digital divide as well as strengthening India’s position in the software and information technology domains.
