Granicus Expands its Cloud Platform for Government with a New Streaming Media Architecture

Release Strengthens Open Government Across Multiple Platforms

San Francisco (February 15, 2011)
– Granicus, the leading cloud platform provider for government transparency, efficiency, and citizen participation, today announced the release of its new streaming media architecture, which expands video compatibility across multiple media players—HTML5, Flash, and Silverlight. Now, government agencies can maximize accessibility by reaching the widest possible audience with timely and mission critical content—across all computers, browsers, and the latest mobile devices. This is the first of many video enhancements Granicus will be making to its cloud platform over the next several months to help agencies achieve the next-generation of open government.

As the way people consume content changes, government needs to change with it to stay relevant,” said Javier Muniz, Chief Technology Officer and Co-Founder on the Granicus Blog. “Granicus is advancing its streaming architecture and cloud platform to ensure government data is accessible to citizens, developers, and global audiences on any device. Our new streaming formats, unique video features, and powerful syndication tools make Granicus the most desired choice for government transparency and accessibility.”

Streaming to mobile devices—including the iPad, iPhone, Android phones and tables, and the Blackberry—is a huge benefit of the new release. Already, the Virginia General Assembly is leveraging the new architecture to broadcast legislative sessions live to mobile devices. Additionally, the City and County of San Francisco’s cable channel SFGTV, Kauai County, HI, the City and County of Denver, CO, and the Colorado Legislature are among 50+ other government agencies participating in Granicus’ pilot release.

Combining the new streaming architecture with Granicus’ media player offers a rich, augmented environment for government meetings and events. Granicus clients, like the Virginia General Assembly, are leveraging these technologies to deliver video and time-synchronized government legislation and documents—all within a single player. Other video features such as share, meta data search, indexing, and RSS allow end-users to easily find and consume government information.

Research shows that online video consumption is rapidly increasing. Granicus is in a strong position to use our video expertise and cloud platform to help government leverage more than just video to maximize transparency,” said Tom Spengler CEO and Co-Founder of Granicus. “Reaching any device or operating system with a compelling video player is only the first step. Combining video with useful tools for citizens and government staff, especially in the areas of efficiency and collaboration, continues to be among our top priorities moving forward.”
