We have included a few of our previous articles outlining some of the examples of data loss, and the solutions available surrounding disaster recovery.

Earthquakes and Cloud Computing

MARCH 14, 2011

Switch on the television, and there’s only one news item grabbing headlines around the globe – the earthquake in Japan. Unless you have been meditating in the Himalayas, you must know that Japan has been hit by the strongest earthquake in 140 years, measuring a massive 8.9 on the Richter scale.

Although the epicenter was hundreds of miles from the mainland, the resultant tsunami has resulted in extensive loss of life and material damages. The official death toll stands at 574, while local media reports put fatality totals closer to 1,300 people. With thousands unaccounted for, that number is expected to rise. Damages are expected to exceed $50 billion... Continued

Disaster Recovery in Cloud Computing

DECEMBER 9, 2011

There are some key areas you want to make sure are covered, and that you fully understand, to make sure they meet your business needs and that no surprises come up should disaster strike.

One man’s disaster is another man’s blip…

I’m sure every good cloud service provider has a disaster recovery plan in place; that they have tested it and certified it, and they have geo-diverse resources available to support operations in the event of a site loss, but if I am going to consider a provider, I want to know what those are, how they are implemented, and what it will mean to me and my users. I’m also very interested in how a cloud service provider will help me in case my company is the one that experiences the disaster… Continued

Creating your Cloud based Backup and Data Recovery strategy

MARCH 29, 2012

Data backups form an important part of an enterprise’s Disaster Recovery/Business Continuity planning (DR/BC). Traditionally the data was stored on tapes and physical media, at an off-site location, to mitigate the effect of the disaster. Saving the data on-site would have negated the benefit of having a backup, since there is a high probability that the backup would have been as compromised as the original. Now, the availability of cloud based backup and recovery services have created an option for enterprises to store at a virtual drive off-site, while reducing the CapEx and improving the recovery time… Continued

For example, drones allow for a potential solutions to a number of long-standing problems. Aerial drones that can carry modules are appearing. These new modular drones have a number…

What Agency Can Benefit The Most From IoT/CSP?

What Agency Can Benefit The Most From IoT/CSP?

What Agency Can Benefit The Most? I was recently giving a talk to some students when one of them asked me a question I hadn’t heard before. She said “How does the Internet of Things really impact the government? What agency benefits the most from IoT/CPS?” I paused for a moment, it is a great…

Knots And Cloud Service Providers

Knots And Cloud Service Providers

How Do These Two Compare? In Boy Scouts, I learned how to tie knots. The quickest knot you can tie is the slipknot. It’s very effective for connecting one thing to another via the rope you have. It was used in setting up tents, mooring boats to docks temporarily and lifting your food up into…

Hoarders And Data Collectors: On The Brink Of Unmanageability

Hoarders And Data Collectors: On The Brink Of Unmanageability

Hoarders and Data Collectors In our physical world, hoarders are deemed “out of control” when they collect too much.  Surely the same analogy applies in our online world.  When providers collect realms of data from us, it seems they lose control of that too?  In the last months it’s not just the frequency of data…

Personal Space And The Internet of Things (IoT)

Personal Space And The Internet of Things (IoT)

The Internet of Things (IoT) There is a long time concept of the personal area network or PAN. For all intent and purposes this is the maximum distance a Bluetooth device can move away from the host and still be functional. As I read the many wonderful pieces on the explosion of IoT and wearable…

Are You Sure You’re Ready For The Cloud?: Connectivity

Cloud Connectivity Many times when we think of “cloud” we think of the elastic compute and storage, but we forget one very important thing, connectivity. Even though connectivity is no part of the cloud itself, it does have a direct bearing on how we access it, use it, and play around with it. If our…
