Earthquakes and Cloud Computing

MARCH 14, 2011

Switch on the television, and there’s only one news item grabbing headlines around the globe – the earthquake in Japan. Unless you have been meditating in the Himalayas, you must know that Japan has been hit by the strongest earthquake in 140 years, measuring a massive 8.9 on the Richter scale.

Although the epicenter was hundreds of miles from the mainland, the resultant tsunami has resulted in extensive loss of life and material damages. The official death toll stands at 574, while local media reports put fatality totals closer to 1,300 people. With thousands unaccounted for, that number is expected to rise. Damages are expected to exceed $50 billion... Continued

Disaster Recovery in Cloud Computing

DECEMBER 9, 2011

There are some key areas you want to make sure are covered, and that you fully understand, to make sure they meet your business needs and that no surprises come up should disaster strike.

One man’s disaster is another man’s blip…

I’m sure every good cloud service provider has a disaster recovery plan in place; that they have tested it and certified it, and they have geo-diverse resources available to support operations in the event of a site loss, but if I am going to consider a provider, I want to know what those are, how they are implemented, and what it will mean to me and my users. I’m also very interested in how a cloud service provider will help me in case my company is the one that experiences the disaster… Continued

Creating your Cloud based Backup and Data Recovery strategy

MARCH 29, 2012

Data backups form an important part of an enterprise’s Disaster Recovery/Business Continuity planning (DR/BC). Traditionally the data was stored on tapes and physical media, at an off-site location, to mitigate the effect of the disaster. Saving the data on-site would have negated the benefit of having a backup, since there is a high probability that the backup would have been as compromised as the original. Now, the availability of cloud based backup and recovery services have created an option for enterprises to store at a virtual drive off-site, while reducing the CapEx and improving the recovery time… Continued

Global Cloud Development An Open Question

Global Cloud Development An Open Question

Global Cloud Development Statistics and projections from Cisco’s Global Cloud Index show that the world’s data centers are already processing 4.7 zettabytes (4.7 million petabytes) per year. Cisco research says this amount will continue to grow by 23% annually for the next few years. (Inforgraphic Source: https://visual.ly/how-much-petabyte) If we project these numbers over the next 25…

Drones: Unlimited Possibilities Await Us – Good And Bad

Drones: Unlimited Possibilities I have written two recent posts here on CloudTweaks about drones. The first, ‘The Pizza Delivery Drone’, was a somewhat comical look at what possibly is to come with future drones. The second was a look at the more immediately possible concept of a modular drone.  Modular drones are capable of supporting…

Securing A Mid-Sized Enterprise: When A Little Assistance Goes A Long Way

Securing A Mid-Sized Enterprise There is no longer any subjectivity in this statement: security is at the top of list for all CIOs. Every meeting I’ve attended over the last three months has been dominated by the topic of security and when it’s injected into the conversation, it’s not necessarily by my team, but the…

The Four C’s – Cloud, Culture, Clash, Change

The Cloud, Culture, Clash, Change “I told the new CTO that this cloud stuff was BS. He came charging in with this ‘cloud first policy’ and look what happened. Previously rock solid systems that had worked for years slowed down and had outages as we tried to run them on the cloud. I doubt that…
