Four Free Information Assets for the Healthcare CIO

“He who has health, has hope. And he who has hope, has everything.”

healthcarehippa

- Ancient proverb.

Even in difficult times, one industry continues to prosper – healthcare. With an ageing population which has high spending power, the growth in healthcare is not unexpected. And like many other industries, healthcare depends heavily on technology for success. From maintaining patient EMRs (Electronic Medical Records) to credentialing doctors, technology permeates every section of the modern healthcare industry.

However, healthcare is held to a higher standard than any other industry on matters of information security, as evidenced by the strict requirements of the HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) of 1996. This has made healthcare CIOs wary of embracing the latest technological advancements like cloud computing.

Here are four free information assets that I believe will help the healthcare CIO move up the value chain from a support function leader to one who drives value in the boardroom.

Key Trends In Healthcare IT

Here’s a paper that looks at the key trends in Healthcare IT. A CIO is typically faced with myriad issues demanding attention; this paper can help prioritize them, to provide patients the best possible care while meeting all regulatory and compliance requirements.

Since the proof is in the pudding, the second information asset is a study on how Georgia-based Upson Regional Medical Center (URMC) used the latest in technology, specifically desktop management, to obtain “40% immediate reduction in helpdesk calls”, “significantly faster log in times for staff” and “an impressive HIPAA evaluation”.

The third information asset examines one of the most pressing needs of the healthcare industry – compliance with regulations regarding “meaningful use,” which ties financial incentives to usage of electronic health records as part of the Medicare and Medicaid EHR Incentive Program, and how virtualization can help.

The final asset that I want to inform our readers about is a paper that looks at that ubiquitous tool of modern business – the e-mail. While cloud-based email like Gmail and Yahoo Mail are an obvious fact of everyday life, the needs of businesses cannot always be met by free products. This white paper helps one evaluate the different options available in the market today and educates on the right questions to ask before selecting a provider.
