The empires of the future are the empires of the mind.”

                                            – Winston Churchill (1874-1965), iconic British Prime Minister.

Unless one plans for the future, one risks getting left behind. Nowhere is this truer than in the field of computing, and planning for Big Data should be on the agenda for every organization.

According to IBM, “Every day, we create 2.5 quintillion bytes of data – so much that 90% of the data in the world today has been created in the last two years alone.” However, Big Data is more than just data, but rather the insights it provides.

Nathan Coutinho, Senior Manager in CDW’s Strategy Group, explains it best – “While some may think that Big Data is all hype and may go away after the next big thing comes along; they are probably not looking at the big picture.  The reality is that the term Big Data really translates to analytics; information that helps you make better day-to-day decisions and ultimately keeps you competitive in a fast-paced business world.  And the truth is, we can all use that in almost every industry today.”

In other words, Big Data allows businesses to do something that they have been doing for some time; only now they can do it better. Considering that we live in an Information Age where petabytes of data are crisscrossing the globe daily, no business can afford to ignore the criticality of Big Data and the Information it provides.

This article by Nathan provides a step-by-step guide to prepare data centers for the challenges Big Data will introduce; while Big Data is undoubtedly an asset, the mechanism must be in place to use it optimally. The article does a good job on showing you how.
