SAP HANA® And Global Healthcare

By Steve Prentice

SAP HANA® and Global Healthcare

When it comes to processing large amounts of data, global healthcare and medicine ranks high as one of our most crucial and demanding areas. The sheer volume of real-time information on patients, illnesses, medical records, pharmaceuticals, techniques, articles, and more that flies around the world is staggering and growing larger by the second. It represents the type of high-speed, high-volume data management that SAP HANA® was created for.

Imagine, for example, the benefits to patients of complex illnesses such as cancer that can be realized when oncologists base their treatments on data provided by patients with similar genetic profiles. Or how World health leaders could detect the outbreak of a regional disease before it spread beyond the boundaries of a particular village or territory; or how a pharmaceutical company could instantly determine where a drug was being administered or currently in stock anywhere in the world? These three scenarios examples are put forth in a short PDF document published by SAPHana.com and entitled SAP HANA Rethinking Information Processing for Genomic and Medical Data.

The document describes the ways in which modern medicine can benefit from the SAP HANA® platform, a revolutionary approach to data analysis, and a service that is provided by a select number of high-level data centers such as CenturyLink Technology Solutions. SAP HANA® is an in-memory data platform that enables large-volume information analysis at extreme speed, which translates into hundreds of millions of complex data records in seconds, using data that is resident in memory. The speed advantage comes from the fact that the data, which is largely unstructured, is not written to disk and consequently does not need to be pre aggregated.

SAP HANA® speaks to the needs of the healthcare industry by allowing the running of “natural-language processing and text analytics technology to draw information from free-form text such as social media or electronic medical records. That information can then be integrated with structured data sets for further analysis.”

In short, it provides analytics 1,000 to 10,000 times faster than other database technologies, which allows, for example, a high-speed analysis of Big Data to reduce pharmaceutical development costs and time-to-market, allowing for more varied and affordable treatment options for consumers.

CenturyLink Technology Solutions President Jeff Von Deylen agrees that the current achievements and future potential for SAP HANA® are enormous, especially when hosted with CenturyLink. Von Deylen addressed the CEO Viewpoints audience at the 2013 SAPPHIRE NOW (SAP’s annual conference): “Companies want to take advantage of SAP HANA to improve how their businesses operate, but they stumble when it comes to deploying the infrastructure that supports the software solution,” he said, referring to the powerful infrastructure role that CenturyLink plays in successful deployments.
