Chasing versus cultivating. The sphere of cloud computing’s involvement with the hunt for a great job is populated with two contingents: those who seek to “chase” literal cloud computing positions, and those who opt to “cultivate” a reputation for their own cloud expertise. The former group, the “chasers,” are currently enjoying a bumper crop of positions as consultants and providers of cloud. However, the well of such posts may run dry as the demand for them begins to slow. To best incorporate the cloud into your work life, emulating the “cultivators” — nurturing your reputation as a cloud professional, even at your current workplace — is vital. Doing so positions you at the vanguard of the cloud in your own occupational backyard, a sage move toward solidifying your value and enhancing your cachet.

Earn cloud skills that pay the bills. You will require more than a well-stocked DropBox and regular reading of CloudTweaks (which remains highly recommended, nevertheless) to claim cloud computing proficiency at your workplace. Consider your genius in relevant, related skill sets that can support your protestations of cloud excellence. How smoothly can you cajole your co-workers (heck, even your own family) into taking up the cloud along with you? Can you rattle off the five most essential new cloud applications on demand? Can you demonstrate to your boss how participation in cloud can boost the business, offset risk and encourage reward? And can you serve as a cloud architect, proposing a structure that safely yet profitably involves your company in cloud? Until you can answer such questions with ease, hold back on tooting your cloud computing horn too loudly.

Before you head up to cloud, get grounded. Many employers will grow annoyed with staff or applicants that tout reams of information on cloud computing without a mastery of the business itself. Ground your excellence in cloud know-how with equally specific respect for the industry or enterprise at hand. Going for a position in healthcare, for example? Research the business vein of that hospital or facility, then base what you can offer via the cloud on that information. Tailoring your genius to a particular gig is doubly impresses: it educates and inspires confidence all at once.

The Government and the Cloud: Defining the Relationship

They say change comes slowly or not at all. The cloud computing movement is thankfully maintaining a slow crawl over the powers-that-be in our governments at every level: local, state, national, even international. (But let’s save the complex, meaty discussion of the global cloud for another piece.) Although practically all of us are quite aware of the influence cloud exerts over the Internet-savvy members of our communities — that is to say, “everybody” — the government still hesitates to truly engage with the growing technological power. True, our leaders and their processes rarely belly-flop into any venture. Yet, with the pace at which cloud is growing, shouldn’t our leading administration make a bigger effort to get hip?

One cogent reason for that hipness to set in asap is how cloud computing is rewriting the definition of boundary in government. Specifically, the cloud is slowly but surely restructuring the division between the public and private sectors. The concept of information technology as business is a primary impetus in this restructuring. Certain sectors predicted last May that the cloud would explode into both sectors, and that prognostication seems to be holding true. Yet a failure to acknowledge and embrace this news will sooner or later do harm to how relevant and effectual our country’s management can be.

In light of this news, should each jurisdiction of government, at every level, conduct a cloud summit? Such a measure would grant an organization the time and focus to clearly consider the place of cloud in both culture and leadership today, potentially equipping it with advantages that streamline and optimize operations. What would a hypothetical version of such a summit comprise of? Surely it should deal with, at a minimum, the precise applications that should be placed in the cloud; the concept and implementation of data security; and the importance of the cloud to daily operations and to a long-term governmental strategy.

Getting governmental bodies comfortable with the concept of the cloud could prove more than a notion. Bureacracy’s well-worn hesitancy to adopt to speedy change position it at odds with cloud computing, whose clout mushrooms by the hour it seems. Enlisting well-vetted experts will be essential to establishing a safe and structured framework through which to introduce cloud’s possibilities to top brass in charge.

The government’s penchant to deliberate and filibuster will not accommodate cloud’s growth. Perhaps launching small projects and endeavors in the cloud, as a form of reconnaissance, would prove best. Detailed and pertinent analyses of those endeavors on their influence would definitely need to couple such investigations.

IT is a tool to reach environmental sustainability objectives which allow business entities to report, manage, analyze, and measure environmental data in order to manage risks and lessen their general impact. The kind of IT services and infrastructure chosen is part of the business entity’s carbon footprint which can control the growth and scale through time. Cloud computing is a solution which lessens hardware requirements, offers scalability, and provides reductions in carbon and direct energy emissions. It also provides efficiency to business scalability, processes, and improved collaboration and communication.

Although cloud computing can greatly lessen IT’s environmental impact, sad to say, cloud models differ in efficiency. Therefore, business entities can include environmental performance as a factor when considering taking advantage of the cloud computing benefits. An on-site IT infrastructure usually operates in extremely low levels of utilization unlike those which operates on a public cloud providing greater utilization rates, and scalability due to elastic provisioning and multi-tenancy. A private cloud can provide greater rates of utilization and elastic provisioning but compared to a public cloud, a public cloud can provide multi-tenancy which is important in carbon efficiency. A business entity must consider these factors before moving to the clouds because these can affect environmental value and business performance.

Migration to the cloud can provide significant and clear benefits in terms of carbon emission and energy efficiency. Cloud computing providers and their clients can obtain benefits from data and services management and transition to huge cloud environments. The transition will provide continuous improvement in carbon footprints and energy consumption. Cloud computing service vendors must be able to invest and select renewable energy sources to power their datacenters. Aside from that, they must be able to influence policymakers not only on the national scale but on the global scale as well. Not only can cloud computing have an influential role on a large scale, it can also provide IT sustainability by dealing with carbon footprints now.

In conclusion, a cloud computing provider must provide a cloud platform which can offer carbon efficiency benefits which are measurable. Through elastic provisioning and multi-tenancy, a service provider is able to support a large number of customers using just a few servers which must be efficient not only in architecture but in code design as well. When cloud computing customers grow continuously, it is expected than carbon emissions will have dramatic reductions.

It is expected that business entities will move their computing and data requirements to public clouds thereby re-allocating or retiring their servers. The potential savings are very possible when these companies take advantage of the opportunities and benefits of public cloud computing. Business organizations can embrace Infrastructure as a Service, Platform as a Service, and Software as a Service which will allow any independent software supplier or business entity’s IT department to create cloud based software and run them on a highly effective and efficient infrastructure which will contribute positively to the IT ecosystem by reducing carbon footprints.

IT sustainability, through electronic media, must make a move towards having a lead role in reducing carbon footprints. Any improvement in methodologies is a welcome relief so that everyone can better understand the true impacts of technology on the environment. Cloud computing providers have a responsibility in ensuring that the model they are ascribing to are highly efficient so as to help reduce carbon emissions.

However, cloud’s advantages to healthcare come with both a good and bad side.

Let’s start with the good news: cloud computing is set to potentially renovate the healthcare and pharmaceutical industries. Medical focused organizations stand to profit immensely, in both time and money, from the cloud’s nifty capacity of conveniently storing data elsewhere. Hospitals worldwide are eager to adopt the technology and improve their efficiency.

Now for the bad news: developed countries, such as the United States and the United Kingdom, will likely see little to none of this growth — at least for a while. The economic recession has made it much less attractive for cloud computing companies to invest in such big markets at these, which now concentrate on slashing budgets and spending conservatively.

Instead, cloud suppliers are focusing their efforts on up-and-coming economic climates, like those that continue to steadily grow in India and Taiwan, which are a bit more accepting of a promising yet radical concept as cloud. Speaking of India, the country so deeply believes in cloud computing that the state has actually taken ownership of a company, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (or BSNL), that has recently launched cloud data centers for healthcare in six cities nationwide, including Mumbai and Jaipur. This news couples with a boom in the number of cloud companies that specialize in storing Electronic Medical Records for hospitals, as indicated by the Certification Commission for Healthcare Information.

For the pharmaceutical sector, professional opinion on the cloud’s potential helpfulness for research and development has skyrocketed. In biology, for instance, cloud computing seems like an advantageous method of managing a boon in data resulting from deeper scholarship in DNA sequencing. Completing sets of data in such an enormous endeavor generates entirely too much data for one computer to hold. Enter the cloud, which not only houses that data, but also frees up researchers to conduct more expansive clinical trials and communicate more effectively with others in the same (or a disparate but still relevant) field.

Cloud Research Findings: Hackers Feast On A Hefty $1 Billion

Fairly recently, analytics giant Price Water House Cooper (PwC) had made its research outcome public. The report throws light on the trembling discovery that hackers have cumulatively laid their dirty hands upon an amount as large as US $1 billion rightly belonging to enterprises stationed in Brazil. Worse than that, Business Software Alliance has ranked Brazil as the top-most cloud unready nation among the 24 momentous others that make up more than 80% of the globe’s communication and information technology.

The release by PwC establishes that close to one-third of ventures in Brazil (to pinpoint, 32%) fell prey to cyber attacks during the past year. The average value of the same is lower globally: 23% only. Out of the cornered 32%, 8% are reported to have suffered a consequent monetary loss more than $ 5 million. These statistics sure are gloomy for the rapidly progressing Brazilian economy.

Part of the PwC study included surveying about 3870 senior level executives in over 72 countries. It was alarming to discover that in the year 2009, cyber crime was of no significant concern according to those executives. The same, today, is viewed as one of the top definite sources of unease among the decision makers in the Brazilian business scene, second to pilfering of physical possessions. The last nail in the coffin appears to be the reprehensible finding that 71% of the culprits originate from within the company; the mainstream (67%) enjoying management roles.

Business Software Alliance (BSA) is the world’s foremost software trade coalition. BSA comprises of almost 100 top notch software ventures, including likes of Siemens, Intel, Apple and Microsoft, pumping in billions of dollars per annum aimed at creating software.

Folks at BSA have scrutinized more than 24 countries that collectively form a little more than 80% of the world’s communication and information technology sector. The drill involved categorization of the countries based on no less than seven parameters. The parameters include: fortification of intellectual property, IT infrastructure, cyber security, data integrity and privacy, free trade, technology compatibility and interoperability, and finally synchronization of law and legal framework.

According to the analysis by BSA, Japan stands out as the most cloud-ready country, with Australia, Germany and France closing in. Occupying the last spot in the list, Brazil is nowhere close to being cloud-ready yet.

A multitude of reasons fuel Brazil’s cloud un-readiness. The core reason is lack of laws vouchsafing privacy and integrity of across the cloud data transfer. Feeble legislation against cyber offence is another compelling factor behind the country’s cloud immaturity. Brazil is yet to formulate and implement apposite regulations to streamline the flourishing of ITC sector.

Contemporary criminal laws within Brazil in the context of digital offence are not in accordance with the existing international standards. Brazil has obvious gulfs in the security of intellectual property and is yet to sign the WIPO Copyright Treaty, a global agreement on copyright law endorsed by affiliate countries of World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). Other fundamental shortcomings include the prevalence of online piracy and inadequacy of filed lawsuits.
