Cloud IT Training – Key To The Present And Future Success

Cloud TrainingCloud computing, big data, enterprise technologies and other cross-dimensional technologies are the hottest portfolios in the IT industry, where many organizations are investing heavily across the globe. This heavy investment is producing a sustainable growth of jobs in the area of information technologies.

A study conducted by CompTIA under the caption of IT industry outlook 2013 suggests that demand of cross-dimensional and cloud-savvy professionals will keep growing at more than 22% in the next seven years till 2020.

In such a growing market of technology professionals, the training would play a much bigger role than ever before – there is a couple of solid reasons for the same. The rapid/regular demand and fast-changing face of technology are two fundamental reasons to justify it.

A survey research regarding the trends both in IT training and IT career was conducted by the TrainSignal an online training company – this study discovers some very significant facts about the trends, importance, and success stories of the IT professionals in the domain of information technology. The survey was carried out with the help of 2,375 participants across the globe; these participants were related to the field of IT, and the survey was completed in the month of January, 2013.

As per the results of the survey more than 94.7% of the professionals think that continuous IT training is a fundamental component for career advancement while more than 67% professional revealed that they received a pay-raise or promotions by getting IT training. A huge ratio of more than 79.7% of the professional feel confident about the job opportunities in the year 2013 – a huge number, 43.5% of professionals switched their career from other fields and more 55.1% of professionals who started their career in IT during the last two years have changed their profession from other fields and switched to information technology by taking training courses and diploma degrees. Among these professional people, more than 77.2% are highly confident about their career growth in this field. More than 56.9% of professionals who switched to an IT career during last two years, received a salary increase; while 40.7% people who adopted an IT career during the last six years got a salary raise of more than 25%.

As far as the type of training and passion about the information technology is concerned, this survey conducted by TrainSignal reveals some of the most encouraging findings. As per the results of the survey, more than 47.7% of the people love and have a passion for technology – Meanwhile, a huge ratio of more than 73.7% of the professionals enjoy solving the most complex problems and issues related to information technology, which is one of the most encouraging signs for the industry.

In response to the reference of the training material, a big ratio, 69.1% of professionals suggest that they refer to training material at least once a month and 57.2% of professionals who joined IT field two years back refer training material on a weekly basis.

The professionals who participated in this survey responded to one question about the type of training they like – 67.9% of professionals like to have online or DVD based video training. The ratio of professionals who liked the training based on the book was about 3% while the ratio of professionals who like to have training in regular classes stood at 29.1%.

This study by TrainSignal institute clearly suggests that online training and is very crucial for advancing and obtaining the better career opportunities in the field of cloud computing information technology.

Lack of Properly Trained Cloud Professionals Threaten Industry

Data from job aggregators focused on the cloud computing market reveals that some areas stand out as the best places to find cloud computing jobs around the world. The irony is that employers in some of these areas are finding it difficult to find qualified people to fill the cloud positions which are apparently paying in the upswings of $100,000 plus, per year. While this is a salary to die for, the fact that no suitable candidates are showing up is raising questions on whether the academic pipeline is releasing enough techies for the evolving cloud space.

Dangerous Gap

Analysts have raised a serious alarm pointing to the danger of heading to a future where the market will experience a boom in cloud computing job opportunities with no properly qualified Cloud Professionals to fill them. Indeed a Microsoft sponsored IDC report shows that cloud jobs will shoot up by 26% every year through the next two years starting 2013. In 2012 alone, approximately 1.7 million jobs fled by a void of qualified skills to fill them. According to IDC, the turn of 2015 will witness a critical swell in IT jobs throughout the global scene, pushing to the 30 million mark.

Way behind

Sadly, IT professionals around the world are seemingly behind the cloud revolution and have not actually been equipped with skills matching what the cloud computing environment is demanding in order to succeed. There is a significant danger here because the consequences could include poor products coming out of cloud factories, not to mention security risks and system vulnerabilities that will threaten millions of businesses around the world who rely on cloud computing to perform their business functions.

Much of the frustration is driven from the approach businesses are taking towards cloud computing. Most businesses are increasingly recognizing the cloud as an integral part of their systems, with majority (half) terming it a priority area. Two thirds are making plans to implement relevant cloud solutions in their enterprises or are already going through the implementation process.

Certification and experience rate poorly

Businesses have acknowledged that while they would love to fill cloud positions in their companies, their fear is drawn from the reality on the ground which points to a scenario where those who claim to be good in the craft lack proper training, experience and credible certification. Recruiting companies are consistently creating systems to aggregate the best cloud jobs. The challenge still stands tall: that there are no qualified cloud professionals to touch these jobs.

Glaring Opportunity?

While the loneliness of a company searching for skills that cannot be found speaks volumes, there is a glaring opportunity that is lighting up somewhere in the uncovered clouds. This is no doubt the time for academic institutions and other stakeholders to seize the moment and introduce practical, full time cloud courses that will then bake the next cloud brains whom the industry needs so badly if the birth of revolutionary cloud products is to be sustained heading into the future.

Students in homes with 24 hour access to the net are simply able to do more and better homework than those who have to leave the house to acquire a WiFi signal. Educators are using cloud based lessons and tools to extend the learning day, but students who do not have web access simply miss out.

Drive In Restaurants Are For More Than Cheap Dates

Across the country, managers of McDonald’s fast food restaurants (which offer free WiFi) report an upsurge in business from students using the Internet, especially in the hours after the public libraries close. The cliché of young professionals hanging out in Starbuck’s does not fit as well for these underprivileged students for no other reason than there are more items on the McDonald’s menu that fall into the price point of a poor student than at Starbuck’s. (WiFi is available for free at both McDonald’s and Starbuck’s, and it is the corporate policy of both chains that purchase is not needed to use the service, but most students feel obligated to purchase something.)

Education and Cloud based technology are a natural fit, and educators are quick to recognize that Internet and computer skills are as important to students as arithmetic and reading. It seems criminal that the students who stand to receive the greatest benefit from Internet based education opportunities will miss out due to the geography of Web Access.

The FCC reports that strides are being made in bringing broadband availability to all Americans, including the rural poor. The technology exists to make this a truly wired nation, all that lacks is the political and financial will to make it so.

Cloud computing’s inherent property of accessibility is one of the key motivators for its adoption by the general public and smaller businesses alike. Businesses and organizations often have offices for all of their employees. But employees are sometimes not able to come to the office to work due to a family emergency, sickness, transport strike, or an extreme weather event.

Thanks to cloud computing accessibility and services like Desktop as a Service (DaaS) and application hosting, employees can do their work remotely when they are unable to go to the office. All they need is a computer or mobile device that can connect to the Internet. This is what it referred to as work shifting and business continuity.

The concept of the physical office itself is becoming obsolete. No one really needs to go to the office unless they need physical files or resources. If, however, you can access all of those files and software from your home or anywhere else you might want to be, in would make life simpler and fun. Imagine that you can work from the comfort of your own living room, the poolside chair, or the park. That is called Work shifting, and it is a global trend pioneered by several online freelance websites. Clients and workers are able to work together even if they are in opposite sides of the world. Although the examples given above do not completely define true Work shifting brought by cloud computing, it is a start. Work shifting allows you more time with friends and families while still accomplishing work-related tasks.

Without a physical office to destroy and disrupt business, hurricanes or other severe weather events will not bring the usual fear of losing data or work time to local businesses. This is called business continuity and it can be a solution to disruptions caused by adverse weather. Because the most important parts of the business have been placed online, business continues despite storms or floods in the real world.

Work shifting allows a business to hire workers from across the globe and to operate 24/7 on a global scale and without the fear of business disruption from any number of known variables. True business continuity brings true profits that only the cloud can provide.

Will Cloud Computing Be To Labor What The Internet Was To Capital?

In 1992, the CME Group launched the first electronic trading platform, which heralded a completely new age for anyone with capital to spare. Electronic trading and money transfers meant a whole new world of opportunity for potential investors.

In essence, the Internet freed wealthy (and even not-so-wealthy) investors to move their money wherever they wanted, whenever they wanted, at a negligible cost. The result has been hedge funds, day traders, a huge uptick in emerging market investments, and a veritable explosion of highly complex “financial instruments.” (Plus, grandpa gets to trade stocks at home.)

And the ultimate effect? The past two decades have been a boon for capital (i.e. people with money to spare) but less than stellar for labor (people who work for a living). As evidence, take the United States:
Median hourly wages (adjusted for inflation) have remained virtually flat since 1992, while the networth of the top 10% of households has grown from an inflation-adjusted average of $1.8 million to $4.2
million (a 133% increase).

But is it possible that cloud computing could reverse the trend? Answering that requires a clear understanding of capital’s current advantage over labor: Investors can fling their investment dollars around the world to find the best opportunities at virtually zero cost. Labor, on the other hand, has much less freedom to move to wherever demand is highest, especially when that demand is in another country.

Thankfully—for labor—that’s an area in which cloud computing is already transforming the marketplace.

Cloud-based communication and collaboration software, online workplaces like eLance/Guru/GetACoder, and even educational platforms are all working together to give many potential employees (mostly knowledge workers) the opportunity to send their labor to wherever demand is highest.

For example, a quick survey of elance job contractors shows the following:

  • Bangladeshi mobile app developers earning $12/hour.
  • Belize-based database administrators earning $35/hour.

In each of these cases, workers are earning far more money for their labor than they typically could locally in their home countries. Most of these workers are also being employed by small business owners who would never be able to launch their startups without access to such competitive labor rates.

But on the flipside, cloud computing makes the outsourcing of knowledge workers to cheaper markets easier than ever. A small business in the United States looking to employ the above contractors locally could easily pay $75/hour for a developer, $40/hour for a writer, and as much as $100/hour for a database consultant.

Nevertheless, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics has shown that local demand for most knowledge worker positions continues to rise. BLS estimates project employment increases of 31% for database administrators, 30% for software developers, and 17% for technical writers over the next 10 years.

Such statistics offer little comfort to workers who’ve recently been laid off or who find themselves bidding on contracts in an online workplace that pay far less than they’re used to. But ultimately, cloud computing offers workers the opportunity to move their labor from one market to another just as efficiently as investors can move their capital. In the short-term, that could cause some pain in the developed world (along with a wave of easy money in developing nations), but a longer view suggests a net win for the world’s educated workers.

Advantages of acquiring a CloudU Certificate include an understanding of: cloud computing integration issues into an organization’s current regulations, risk, and compliance framework; an ability to build an economic importance inside the organization by implementing cloud innovations; understanding cloud computing integration into an organization’s IT infrastructure; a technical knowledge of cloud computing foundations; and a tool to demonstrate professional development. The certificate can be earned by successfully completing each of the ten CloudU quizzes and a final examination consisting of 50 questions. The passing grade is 80 percent.

An IBM Cloud Computing Certification allows you to become a Certified Solution Advisor for Cloud Computing Architecture V2, a professional who understands cloud computing concepts, benefits, design and architecture principles. This certification demonstrates that you are able to describe how cloud computing can help a user as well as map user requirements to IBM’s various cloud computing products and services.

Taking another IBM Cloud Computing Certification, you can become an IBM Certified Solution Architect for Cloud Computing Infrastructure V1, an expert in IBM’s cloud computing plan, management, design, and architecture principles. This certificate will demonstrate your proficiency in IBM’s cloud computing design principles and concepts and your ability to provide a user with a roadmap towards a cloud solution. You will also be able to design a complete solution using IBM’s design as well as blue principles in order to meet a user’s requirements. The line between cloud computing and information technology is hazy, but it is always safe to say that they complement each other, with cloud computing representing the latest paradigm for remodeling IT services. There are very clear roles of IT in cloud computing technology, which can yield greater business benefits if well harnessed.

On one hand, IT is playing a big role in proactive management of new acquisitions, financial trade-offs, and security challenges of cloud-based services. This means that the role of IT has changed from the traditional owner and operator of IT infrastructure to a more managerial one—managing the IT supply chain. IT systems now manage more complex, multi-platform internal and external services, with CIOs being tasked with redefining the value of IT to the business. This shift presents exciting new opportunities for IT professionals to expand their skill sets and become strategic advisers to businesses.

The majority of the tasks that are traditionally performed manually by network administrators have been automated by cloud-computing outsourced services, e.g., sets of web services. These IT personnel now spend more time in vendor management, forming an all-important conduit between cloud-based service providers and their users. This means that the IT role in cloud computing can be harnessed to inspire innovations and new models.

The ‘self-service’ feature of cloud-based services, on the other hand, will alter the way administrators and users interact with data centers, raising the need for different administrative structures and IT leadership. For example, new titles will come up that may include positions such as cloud architect, cloud service manager, cloud integration specialist/expert, cloud security manager/engineer, among others. These are administrative structures that may be fashioned right off IT roles and challenge cloud computing for the better. IT has already gained the role of mitigating cloud computing challenges faced in areas like defense and sensitive programs like security domains and nuclear concerns.

IT notwithstanding, cloud computing is still new, yet is gaining popularity and widespread use with countless issues and questions yet to be satisfied by the service providers, users, governments, and other industry regulators. But this scenario makes it even better for IT because it can easily provide a framework in formulation of policies, regulations, and recommendations on the parameters of cloud-based resources.
