Cloud Gaming Solutions For Android Games Have Arrived

Mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablets, are fast becoming one of the top ways to play video games. Hits, such as Angry Birds, Temple Run and Candy Crush Saga, have all garnered tens of millions of downloads and have truly become icons of the video-gaming industry in general.

Now what if you could play all of your favorite Android games in the cloud? This question might seem a little bit odd considering that all Android-based games are played online. However, there is a big difference between general online play and cloud play. With cloud play, you can stream games to a variety of devices, as opposed to solely playing them on Android devices as you see now. Not to mention the fact that all of your stats and saved games are held safely in the cloud.

Some of the top names in cloud gaming are beginning to realize what an incredible, untapped market this really is. While many Android games are completely free to play, extra items and content can usually be purchased for an added cost.

nVidia Shield

Graphics-hardware giant, nVidia, recently announced that they would be developing a cloud-gaming solution for Android-based games. This would come in the form of a hardware device dubbed nVidia Shield, first introduced at CES 2013, and would work in tandem with their cloud-based service, Grid.

The tie in with Android games became apparent with an update that was released towards the end of last year. This update included an upgrade containing a feature called Console Mode, which allows you to connect to an outside device, such as a television or monitor. The content displayed would come through in full 720p. This in turn provided the opportunity for top-of-the-line Android-based games to channel through the console onto an outside peripheral.

Google Play Games

Given that they are the creative minds behind the Android operating system, it comes as no surprise that Google would jump on the cloud-gaming bandwagon and develop their own service. Announced last year, and dubbed Google Play Games, this service would allow players to cloud save their games and play them on wide range of different devices. In March, Google added cross-platform support, allowing games to be played on iOS-driven devices as well.

Agawi

Towards the end of last year, cloud-gaming provider, Agawi, announced the launch of a platform that is designed to stream Android apps and games to tablets, smartphones and computers. By combining Amazon’s AWS and EC2 platforms, Agawi is able to stream games, even if they are extremely graphics intensive, to devices unable to run them on their own.

Conclusion

While playing Android-based games online has always been a possibility, having the capacity to play them in the cloud is a relatively-new phenomenon. These advances will allow users to take full advantage of all the perks that come from cloud gaming. These include the ability to start a game on one device and finish it up on another, as well as store all of your important user information and scores directly in the cloud.

Last month, we posted an article dealing with the question of whether or not indie game publishers would someday rival their AAA-developer counterparts. If you have had a chance to read it, chances are that by now you realize just how powerful the indie-gaming industry is, as well as the sheer potential it holds.

The one real obstacle standing in the way of indie-gaming publishers’ realization of this potential is resources. Putting aside the millions of dollars and tons of manpower AAA-developers enjoy just to create the game, the resources available for cloud play and distribution are greater than those available for indie publishers by an order of magnitude.

That is how it has been so far. Will this trend continue?

Absolutely not.

We now have multiple companies whose sole purpose is to provide powerful and comprehensive platforms on which small developers can release their games upon. These companies provide the back end to those who do not have the resources to develop them on their own. The result is the solution to development and delivery problems experienced by so many aspiring small developers.

Which Companies Rule?

It is true that cloud gaming is still in its relative infancy. When Onlive went bust in 2012, the industry was shaken to its core, wondering if the future of cloud gaming was gone for good. Thankfully, enough big names in technology realized that one setback does not necessarily kill any chance of an industry taking hold. Many of these companies have recognized that indie publishers are one of the keys to growing this industry. Here are some of the latest developments to hit the scene.

AWS: Also the subject of one of our previous articles, Amazon’s AWS recently announced that it would make its services available to small developers. The most important of these services is AppStream, which streams content directly to end users, without having to download large files.

CiiNOW: CiiNOW’s purchase last year of Plug In Digital shows that they are dedicated to allowing indie developers to showcase their offerings in the same way larger companies do.

Microsoft: Touted as the next big battleground between Sony and itself, indie developers are receiving tons of attention by Microsoft lately. Windows Azure, in combination with Microsoft’s Visual Studio Online toolset, is identified to be one of the best ways for an indie publisher to develop and showcase their own games.

AppWarp: While AppWarp is by no means a new solution, its most recent release includes one of the Holy Grails of cloud computing: on-the-fly region switching. This allows for the server to automatically switch depending on the location of the player. This effectively reduces latency issues by an order of magnitude, further leveling the playing field between indies and AAA houses.

Conclusion

If you have had the opportunity to read any of my previous articles, you have no doubt come to realize by now that realism and the most immersive experience possible are the keys to the future of cloud gaming. While this may sound like it rings true for all types of video games, these factors are most important when it comes to cloud play. More realism and immersion allows for quicker response times to outside stimuli. And as any cloud gamer will tell you, due to latency and bandwidth issues, a split second can easily spell the difference between success and defeat.

So which technology do we look to, which will allow us this needed increase in reactive response? Two words: virtual reality.

What Is Virtual Reality?

Virtual reality, also known in some circles as immersive multimedia, is defined as “a computer-simulated environment that can simulate physical presence in places in the real world or imagined worlds.” Hardware and software work in tandem to provide real-world responses to physical input, including moving your head and sighting specific objects.

What We Have Now

Current virtual reality hardware and software offerings are severely limited. Technology is just beginning to advance to the point where true virtual reality is possible, making the examples of yesteryear seem truly primitive by comparison. So while we may not yet have the ability to traverse virtual worlds in a way that is comparable to real life, offerings like the following may bring us to the true immersion needed to realize this dream.

Oculus Rift

No single piece of hardware related to virtual reality and cloud gaming has received more hype than the Oculus Rift. The Oculus Rift is a headset seen as one of the true answers to the best virtual-reality experience possible.

Facebook’s recent acquisition of the Oculus Rift has the games industry in a buzz. Will Facebook completely rebrand the Oculus Rift, lessening its potential impact on the gaming industry as a whole? According to Facebook, no, they have no intentions of doing so. Time will only tell where this cool new piece of hardware will truly make its mark.

Morpheus

The Oculus Rift is not the only piece of virtual-reality hardware that has the industry in a buzz. Industry-leader, Sony, has also decided to jump into the fray with Project Morpheus. First revealed at this year’s GDC (Game Developers Conference), Sony plans to use the Morpheus as an enhancement of their already solid game offerings, turning fun into amazing.

Games: Now and Then

Given that true virtual reality hardware is pretty much non-existent at this point, current games are extremely limited. Eve Online is a perfect example of a current game that will benefit greatly from advances in virtual reality. The creator of Second Life, a completely virtual world that players can live in, envisions that his next project will fully utilize virtual-reality hardware, making the line between virtual and real difficult to pin down.

Conclusion 

More so now than at any point in history, we are finally poised to realize the true power of virtual reality. No matter which genre of games you enjoy the most, expect it to be enhanced by an order of magnitude with the inclusion of virtual-reality hardware.

When cloud-gaming pioneer, Onlive, suffered its much-hyped setback in 2012, questions began popping up all over the internet from both industry professionals and end users alike. Is this the end of cloud gaming? If not, who will take over the reins as the go-to name in cloud gaming? These questions, as well as many other similar ones, resounded loudly no matter which corner of the online-gaming world you visited.

While several different companies have begun making it known that they will be continuing in the quest for the premier cloud-gaming service, such as Sony’s Playstation Now, no one entity is currently recognized as the top name in cloud gaming. However, there is one company that may offer the services necessary to claim this top spot: Amazon.

Why Amazon?

So why would Amazon, traditionally primarily associated with the retail sales of tangible goods, qualify as the leader in cloud gaming, as opposed to the more well-known Playstation Now launch? The answer is found in three simple letters: AWS.

What Is AWS?

Amazon Web Services, also commonly known as AWS, is a cloud-computing platform launched in 2006. AWS was designed as a tool for the development and offering of third-party applications, using Amazon’s vast array of computing hardware. In essence, Amazon is offering individual companies the capability to offer their own streaming game services, without the need to buy tons of expensive equipment. AWS servers can be found in eight locations throughout the country, with the lion’s share being housed in northern Virginia.

Capabilities of AWS

The list of different capabilities and services achievable with AWS is long and varied. However, there are a few different components that are perfect for the development and release of cloud games. A few of the most important of these are:

Auto Scaling: Internet traffic, especially for cloud games, can vary throughout the day. Instead of having to pay for bandwidth you do not use, Auto Scaling allocates more resources during the times you need them the most and scales them back when they are no longer needed.

Amazon CloudFront: Billed as a “content-delivery system“, Amazon CloudFront is the key component needed to get your games where they need to go with the least amount of latency. In addition, no commitments are needed in order to use Amazon CloudFront.

S3: Since all game developers and producers need somewhere to store their content and data, S3 (which stands for Simple Storage Solution) is a must have. S3 provides the capacity to store videos, updates and actual content. Even better, recent reports show that the cost for S3 will go down by about half.

What Makes AWS Unique?

AWS is a full solution for smaller developers and companies designed specifically for them to have a low-cost and powerful solution to offer cloud games. This is in direct contrast to services available now, as well as those coming down the pipeline. If you have a cloud-based game and want the best way to reach your customers, AWS is the answer.

Come with me, if you will, back to the fall of 2012. Cloud-gaming giant, Onlive had made its spectacular implosion earlier in the year, leaving many industry professionals and end users alike wondering where cloud gaming would go from there.

It was around this time that news outlets all over the Web began running stories proclaiming the impending arrival of cloud gaming services from some of the top cable companies in the United States. Among these prospective cloud gaming providers are AT&T, Time Warner and Cox. No matter where you turned around, gaming news outlets all seemed to be in agreement that cloud gaming from cable providers was right around the corner.

And then it stopped.

For approximately a year and a half, virtually no more word was heard on whether or not these flights of literary fancy would turn into a reality. Focus seemed to shift from cloud gaming services altogether, possibly as a result of the demise of Onlive. Whatever the case may have been, the hype over the impending arrival of cloud games directly from your cable company completely fizzled out.

So where does that leave us? Is the possibility of cloud gaming services via a cable company truly just a flight of fancy? This author says no, and here is why:

Xfinity

Towards the close of last year, reports began to circulate that cable-giant, Xfinity (formerly Comcast) would be testing out a cloud-gaming platform in conjunction with Electronic Arts’ Origin service. The service would work in tandem with an app that you would need to download and install on an iPad. An iPad 2 or later would be needed in order to use the service.

A free trial was offered to all current Xfinity X1 subscribers via an email invitation. This trial provided access to an initial eight games, dealing with a wide variety of video game genres. These titles include FIFA 13, Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit and NBA Jam. Playing the games was accomplished by using credits, of which you received 60 to start out. Additional credits to be used towards gameplay can be purchased directly through the Xfinity service.

KDDI

Japanese telecommunications giant, KDDI, is also planning on entering into the cloud-gaming industry by offering streaming games in tandem with their cable services. This offering, named GameNow, is being produced in tandem with Ubitus, one of the leaders in Japanese cloud solutions.

GameNow was launched in March of 2014, and was initially available to all existing KDDI subscribers. Two free months of access were offered as a trial, as well as a free gamepad for the first five thousand subscribers.

Conclusion

While the mainstream hype over the possibility of receiving cloud-gaming services directly through your able company may have quieted down for now, it is by no means a dead issue. With Xfinity paving the way for more cable companies to jump onboard, expect to see additional providers testing out their own platforms in the coming months.

I will be the first to admit, I am a Steam junkie. The sheer number of different games available for purchase or demo is staggering, providing choices no matter what budgetary constraints I am under. All of the industry staples are here, including giants like the Elder Scrolls, Bioshock and Total War franchises. No matter what mood you are in, you are sure to find tons of good titles to satisfy it using the Steam service.

Whilst poking around the other day looking for a new game to master, I noticed the Indie section for the first time. It caught my eye, mainly due to all of the hype that has surrounded this category of games in recent news. While big-developer games are still the reigning champs of the gaming world, indie producers are fast making serious inroads and claiming their slice of the pie.

What Are Indie Games?

Indie games set themselves apart from traditional games in that their creation and development is done by private individuals or small teams. This is a sharp contras to traditional games, which usually have hundreds of people to work on them and millions of dollars to spend creating them.

This production process produces games, which while usually less graphic-intensive than their mainstream counterparts, can actually have a heightened feel of creativity to them. In addition, due to the absence of the immense operating costs of big-game publishers, indie games are usually much less expensive to buy.

What Is Available Now?

If you want an example of just how successful an indie game can be, look no further than Minecraft. The designers of Minecraft took the simple activity of building and turned it into one of the most loved and lucrative games currently available.

Minecraft is not the only game that has caused industry experts and players alike to sit up and take notice. In fact, two staples of the mainstream gaming industry, Sony and Microsoft, have already professed their love for indie games. Each of these behemoths recently announced different features and packages designed specifically with the indie game in mind.

What Is on the Horizon?

Obviously, given that technology is changing and evolving each and every day, we are by no means at the pinnacle of possibility when it comes to indie games. In fact, independent developer, Octav, predicts that many current gaming models used by industry giants will fall by the wayside, clearing the way for more indie games to rise to prominence.

The creativity previously mentioned that is so prevalent in indie games is also expected to turn the tide in their favor. Big game developers have a narrow look when developing a game, usually constrained by the ever-present need to turn a profit. While indie game developers do want to make money, many times the driving force behind their creations is turning a good idea into a cool game. This will lead to a much more diverse landscape to choose your indie games from.

While indie gaming has certainly begun to enter into its own, the possibilities and potential it holds signals a true rise in prominence for this genre in the coming years. If you enjoy cloud gaming, as well as an inexpensive and diverse menu of different options to choose from, indie gaming may just well be your perfect niche.

When it comes to picking a word used to describe the pinnacle of the online gaming experience, in this author’s humble opinion, that word would have to be “realistic.” Sure, plenty of other attributes exist that are important to the gaming world in general, and the online gaming world in specific. However, no Holy Grail exists that is more important than finding the most realistic gaming experience imaginable.

This quality is actually more important in cloud gaming situations than what you would find playing a single-player game. Granted, most people who play video games like to experience a realistic environment in the games they play. However, given the fact that much of the efficacy of cloud play is based on how quickly you react to, and interact with, your surroundings, the tiny details found in more realistic games usually give the gamer an edge.

So how do we further increase the realism found in the cloud games we play? Graphics and sound have reached pinnacles unseen in years past, contributing greatly to the level of realism we enjoy. There is, however, one area that has garnered an exceptional amount of buzz from recent innovations that could very well be the answer to the ever-present quest of supreme realism: haptic technology.

What Is Haptic Technology?

Haptic technology is defined as “a tactile feedback technology which takes advantage of the sense of touch by applying forces, vibrations, or motions to the user.” Basically what this means is that using different types of vibrations and motions, haptic technology can mimic one of the areas neglected in most current game hardware: the tactile.

What We Have Today

Haptic technology has actually been around for quite a while, with the first patent based on it being filed in the 1970s. Unfortunately, the tech hardware and software available at the time were in no way sophisticated enough to fully utilize this new innovation. As a result, similarly to what has happened with all types of inventions unsupported by what was currently available, it was shelved.

One of the first popular uses of haptic technology in the gaming industry was the Sony DualShock controller. This controller differed from all other offerings at the time by providing a vibratory feeling whenever predefined actions occurred in the game. Instead of just seeing the gun you are using, now you can feel it buck in your hand in tandem with the shots you fire.

Another exciting product that is just starting to show its face on the mainstream consumer market is the haptic glove. Also know as a wired glove or data glove, haptic gloves take the premise first established by products like the DualShock and enhances it by an order of magnitude. The amount of different ways to customize these gloves, such as the Keyglove, is astounding.

What Is On the Horizon?

If you think the DualShock or the Keyglove are cool, imagine of you had the capacity to feel haptic feedback throughout your entire body? Sound too good to be true? A new Kickstarter project, named the ARAIG, says differently.

The ARAIG, which stands for As Real As It Gets, is a suit that you wear, which contains 48 different haptic feedback sensors placed strategically throughout it. This allows for individual sensations to be felt exactly where they should be. Things like the impact of a bullet, the explosion of a bomb or even pouring rain, can be felt exactly where you would feel it in a real-world scenario.

Given that a split second can turn a killstreak into a fatality, having every possible way to experience things more quickly can only serve to enhance the game you are playing, as well as its playability. Haptic technology can provide this advantage, potentially turning you into the gamer only found in your dreams.

Imagine, if you will, living in a world that is hotly contested by two different factions, each vying for absolute dominance of both land and people. You find yourself standing on your local street corner, with the burning knowledge that you must find the portals that connect your world together and hack them for your faction.

Sounds like something straight out of a science fiction movie, right? Well it isn’t. Enter Ingress.

Ingress is a game developed and produced by Google and is one of the most successful ventures into the world of augmented-reality gaming to date. Gameplay consists of locating and “hacking” different portals around the globe, in order to solidify your faction’s hold on the general populace. Rewards, such as the exotic material called XM, which is needed to keep you healthy and energized, can be found along the way as gameplay progresses

Ingress is just one of the examples of how augmented reality is poised to revolutionize gaming in general, and cloud gaming in specific. Why is this the case? The answer is easy: realism. While running around virtual worlds battling minions from all corners of the globe is fun, traditional cloud gaming still consists primarily of computer-generated imagery. While this is acceptable for many settings and applications, it does not hold a candle to being able to experience the real world in tandem with the game you are playing.

Google Glass

As of right now, the only way to enjoy this type of entertainment is on the screen of a smartphone or tablet. While these applications are cutting edge by today’s standards, having to look at a screen, as opposed to the world itself, makes any advantages in realism virtually nullified. So how can we circumvent this obstacle? The answer lies in one of the most anticipated pieces of hardware in recent memory: Google Glass.

Instead of being forced to consul you tech device’s screen while playing your cloud-based game, Google Glass puts everything right in front of your eyes. This allows you to act like you normally would traversing the world, with images and data being beamed directly onto a lens poised right in front of your eye. As you can probably imagine, this adds a degree of realism and immersion that cannot be contested by even the most powerful gaming rigs or consoles.

Where Do We Go From Here?

Ingress and Google Glass are only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to augmented reality and gaming. For example, depth-sensing cameras are expected to hit mobile devices as early as this year. These cameras, in tandem with increasingly-sophisticated software, have the capacity to incorporate even more real-world data, further increasing the level of realism by a long way.

Conclusion

While we are in no way capable of mimicking many of the augmented-reality scenarios hat you see in many of the more popular science fiction movies as of yet, that future is eminently possible and could very well arrive sometime in this decade. If you are a gamer who enjoys cloud gaming, expect to have your mind blown with what we have coming on the horizon.
