……An Open Source App That Can Marry Devices with No Boundaries

Ever wondered why the document always comes after the file? And why the file as data stays away in a remote datacenter while the document, as the living part of the file, remains for perpetual exploitation on that limiting cocoon that is the personal computer? Each of these questions has an answer courtesy of DoxOut, a startup cloud company from Macedonia in southeast Europe. It is one of the select 5 in the shortlist of the Europe 2012 LaunchPad honors by Gigaom.

According to DoxOut, it is still possible to save changes, check mistakes, collaborate and create documents across devices, anywhere, using an app that interconnects through leveraging on functionality. If it is hard to edit a novel on a five-inch Smartphone screen, the solution comes with this app that melts hardware connections first, by attaching the device to a larger, often incompatible screen like a smart TV set. Next, the app melts different software by synching all OSs so that the novel will be an end product, quick enough, using the DoxOut app and other native processors, now in full sync.

On the site itself, one learns that DoxOut is a do-it-all sort of application. There is a screen shot that shows a cross-section of gadgets, all smart, some computers, others tablets and yet others television sets. The homepage explains the reason for these mind-boggling interconnections with electronics of different tech breeds. There is even a point where an Apple Smartphone, despite that family of devices being mouse-free, acts as a makeshift mouse for some bigger device. Talking of madness that makes sense, this is one that really does.

The bottom-line is that DoxOut is a sort of HTML 5 of devices. It does not require a disparate version for the desktop, handheld device, personal computer or television. The makers claim that it is just one system that operates on its own Operating System but works on other OS’s, as well. For example, they show that when using Windows 7, it is still possible to synchronize the DoxOut machinery concurrently and so is it with Android OS.

Such high affinity device marriages are reportedly the first to ever have happened in the tech and Operating Systems’ world.

Where do all these interconnections lead? According to DoxOut creators, it is all about open source syncing of devices, be it a phone or computer, for easy editing, creation and collaboration on files. This means that it does not matter the gadget that is at hand at the given time, for it will be compatible with the system. Additionally, it supports UI, as well as, UX technologies. It all boils down to a fact: cloud systems have enabled this high-end and almost unimaginable integration to work out eventually.

The Cloud aspect

So what exactly is the cloud aspect on DoxOut? It is more of Platform as a Service (PaaS) kind of offering than infrastructure. It concentrates on the application part of cloud computing. It helps to manage documents/files across gadgets, however functionally different they may be. There are exceptions, however. Instead of keeping the files faraway into a server for a rainy day, as the mainstream cloud normally does, DoxOut offers an intelligent formula of storing and amplifying. The amplifying part means that users have full access of their documents, without any requirement to download them, because the app controls changes locally. In other words, searching, manually keeping and offloading of documents will never happen again. DoxOut treats files as documents, rather than taking documents for files. This means that any fine changes that visit upon the important piece of data will always come as an alert to the user, who does not have to insert it by hand or rummage through data, looking for it.

In the spirit of collaborating with other office workers, any revision that comes off a document will emerge as an alert to each member. They can then decide to add or dismiss these changes, before convening on a clean copy. All this time, no downloading or storing takes place.

The only downturn to such a perpetual system is that, when it creates a private cloud, it does so using CDs, which might be limiting. Many cloud operators usually render their app cannon through online means. However, for cloud security reasons, the disk format might be wise.

Testimonials from presentation teams reveal an affinity for the DoxOut app among the populace. A user of PowerPoint, known as Marco exclaims: “Long time I’ve been searching for an app…for PowerPoint presentations…on an iPad.”

There are others who associate with DoxOut in a heroic manner, like Brigit, a user who says that she has emerged a ‘rock star’ in her close circles for presenting ideas through the application.

Migrating an application to the cloud is not an easy task. It is important to strictly adhere to the seven step model to ensure that the process is robust and error free. The seven quick stages of migration into the cloud are outlined below.

1. Assess

Migration starts with an assessment of the issues relating to migration, at the application, code, design, and architecture levels. Moreover, assessments are also required for tools being used, functionality, test cases, and configuration of the application. The proof of concepts for migration and the corresponding pricing details will help to assess these issues properly.

2. Isolate

The second step is the isolation of all the environmental and systemic dependencies of the enterprise application within the captive data center. These include library, application, and architectural dependencies. This step results in a better understanding of the complexity of the migration.

3. Map

A mapping construct is generated to separate the components that should reside in the captive data center from the ones that will go into the cloud.

4. Re-architect

It is likely that a substantial part of the application has to be re-architected and implemented in the cloud. This can affect the functionalities of the application and some of these might be lost. It is possible to approximate lost functionality using cloud runtime support API.

5. Augment

The features of cloud computing service are used to augment the application.

6. Test

Once the augmentation is done, the application needs to be validated and tested. This is to be done using a test suite for the applications on the cloud. New test cases due to augmentation and proof-of-concepts are also tested at this stage.

7. Optimise

The test results from the last step can be mixed and so require iteration and optimization. It may take several optimizing iterations for the migration to be successful.

It is best to iterate through this seven step model as this will ensure the migration to be robust and comprehensive.

Another 6 percent said ‘yes’ to the possibility of using it within the next five years. The high numbers of people using SaaS automatically translates to high spending on the service, easily putting it ahead in terms of the amounts spent by consumers for deployment and access.

3. Security

Security in the cloud is receiving intensive scrutiny because no business wants to risk putting their data in insecure platforms. You can expect advanced approaches for encrypted logins, blocking unauthorized access, and  controls of the security of the information stored in the cloud.

We are already seeing the emergence of companies that are focused on providing security consultations and services for cloud hosting firms. This will give the providers an opportunity to offer guaranteed security, especially for corporate clients with huge amounts of data that could experience irreversible damage if their data is compromised.

4. Growth of apps

The CTO of VMware told Forbes in early 2012 that more apps are likely to become available as a core offering of cloud solutions. Some of the examples he gave include real-time data analytics systems that will help companies to leverage on the power of the cloud and provide scalable services to their customers. The concept of in-memory databases is a case in point, allowing entire databases to be brought into memory where they are addressed much faster by processors. Cloud computing challenges have always been there. Companies are increasingly aware of the business value that cloud computing brings and are taking steps towards transition to the cloud. A smooth transition entails a thorough understanding of the benefits as well as challenges involved. Like any new technology, the adoption of cloud computing is not free from issues. Some of the most important challenges are as follows.

1. Security and Privacy

The main challenge to cloud computing is how it addresses the security and privacy concerns of businesses thinking of adopting it. The fact that the valuable enterprise data will reside outside the corporate firewall raises serious concerns. Hacking and various attacks to cloud infrastructure would affect multiple clients even if only one site is attacked. Cloud providers still lack round-the-clock service; this results in frequent outages. It is important to monitor the service being provided using internal or third-party tools. It is vital to have plans to supervise usage, SLAs, performance, robustness, and business dependency of these services.

5. Performance and Bandwidth Cost

Businesses can save money on hardware but they have to spend more for the bandwidth. This can be a low cost for smaller applications but can be significantly high for the data-intensive applications. Delivering intensive and complex data over the network requires sufficient bandwidth. Because of this, many businesses are waiting for a reduced cost before switching to the cloud.

All these challenges should not be considered as road blocks in the pursuit of cloud computing. It is rather important to give serious consideration to these issues and the possible ways out before adopting the technology.

Over the past decade, computing trends shifted towards the internet and globalization. This allowed for people across the globe to interact with each other anonymously through chat rooms and online forums. And now with the popularity of social networking, the anonymity is slowly disappearing. That is in the social aspect of computing. In the business aspect, another paradigm has grown in popularity. Because of the turbulent global economic climate, organizations are scrambling to find solutions that would help them leverage their strengths and open themselves to a wider market, a global audience. This is the promise that cloud computing is slowly fulfilling. It allows organizations to provide better services or better administer their internal business through cheap and scalable IT capabilities.

Cloud computing is not just revolutionizing businesses, but also affecting the daily lives of the normal everyday Joe. This is because in our day to day interaction with the internet, we are bound to come across aspects of cloud computing whether we know it or not.

The Possibilities

So here are some of the ways that cloud computing is doing to actually improve our lives, or at least change it in some way.

1. Power to provide speed and computing power without interruption. For a person to become a “real gamer” that person needs the hardware to support the claim, or at least support the game and run it in a decent manner. This of course needs a lot of the green stuff, you know, money. But cloud computing is changing all that. Imagine playing the most hardware demanding games on a tablet. Yes this is entirely possible as the game itself will be run on very capably hardware on the server side, while the player is on a mobile device or a weak computer simply streaming the video from the server and uploading controls in real time. All you need is an internet connection capable of streaming videos without stuttering. An example is the service OnLive.

2. Timely corrections can be done. Cloud computing will literally make life easier through notifications and alerts and specific information streaming. For example, as your car may be running near empty and the computer calculates that it cannot reach the nearest gas station, it could send an alert to that gas station in advance that you need some gas delivered halfway to their station, thereby avoiding the inevitable. And if ever your car breaks down, its computer could simply stream you some instructions on how to fix it if it can be remedied or notify the nearest towing company if it can’t.

3. Computing will become invisible. Pretty soon computers and software will become “invisible” in that they are hidden from view. We may simply have to make gestures and a camera will interpret those and provide us what we need, or we simply have to say it. Consider J.A.R.V.I.S. from the Ironman movies, you simply ask something and that information is streamed from the cloud to a projection or a monitor. Most times it could even predict what you need based on past actions and personal behavioral trends.

4. Visibility and reliability of inventory records. Sometimes we go to an online catalogue and see an item we want but then find out that it’s unavailable from the store only when we get there. With cloud computing, these inventories can be updated automatically and will prevent such disappointments. You might ask, what’s the point and why not just buy it online? Well, if you are shopping for clothes, it is always best to do it personally.

5. Companies will become trusted advisors. With our activities being logged online, it won’t be long that companies will know exactly what we want or need when we want or need them. When this happens, advertisements will no longer be required to grab our attention so we buy them but rather they will simply know who needs their products and immediately advise those persons instead.

6. Provide a unique way of selling. As with the point above, businesses would already know what we want and need so they can immediately target the real customer. In other aspects our purchases are slowly moving from the retail store to online stores. In terms of software, free versions can be provided through the cloud and eventually when these people need the other functions of that software, they will purchase it.

7. Globalization of small scale businesses. Because of the very low barrier of entry to cloud computing and the pay-per-use use model, even small businesses can have the IT capabilities of large multinational companies, and thus allowing them to compete globally. For example a small graphic studio from a third world country like the Philippines can sell their services online through various cloud solutions which could not have been possible just a decade ago.

8. Secured data stored in laptops. Stealing corporate laptops is the easiest way to gain sensitive information and conduct industrial espionage. By storing important files and data on the cloud, it can be made secure and can be accessed from anywhere around the world, not being tied down inside a specific device.

9. Developing countries exploiting cloud computing quicker. Organizations and businesses in developing countries that may not have the IT equipment available to large corporations will embrace cloud computing faster to be competitive and may even become market leaders in their own right because of it.

10. Make everyone self reliant. Because of the vast resources being made available through the cloud, companies can rely solely on their own prowess with the help of these resources. It can be used for product development, testing quickly and cheaply, and even collaboration.

According to David Cearly, Gartner fellow and vice president, cloud computing has changed the ways businesses and individuals choose to deliver or acquire IT services with less emphasis on traditional hardware and software licensing constraints. It has made an important effect on every facet of IT and the way users use business, information, and applications services. According to another Gartner fellow and vice president, David Mitchell Smith, due to the rapid change and evolution of cloud computing technologies and trends, cloud computing service providers have continuously misunderstood the cloud as they use it as a marketing term.  Because of the level of change, uncertainty, confusion, and impact, Gartner has released 5 trends which will enable cloud computing to accelerate, shift, or reach a tipping point until 2015.

With the various benefits cloud computing can deliver, a business organization can optimize its cloud investment by careful examination and mapping of different challenges such as integration needs, licensing constraints, supplier lock-in, availability and performance concerns, transparency, and security. Cloud computing can be utilized to shift the costs to operational from capital expenditures. It can also lessen complexity, provide greater agility, and reduce overall cost. Businesses can also take advantage of the shift of IT resources to value added activities beneficial for the business. Cloud computing can also serve as a foundation for business innovation as well as reduce potential risks.

Hybrid cloud will play an important role in cloud computing. Hybrid computing offers combination and coordination of off-site cloud services with an on-premise application or infrastructure services. It may be able to unify all platforms into a single cloud. According to Gartner, business entities must focus its efforts on data and application integration thereby linking fixed external and internal applications.
