Principles of an Effective Cybersecurity Strategy

According to MetricStream’s, ‘The State of Cyber Security in the Financial Services Industry’ report, around 66 percent of financial services institutions have faced at least one cyber-attack in the last 12 months. The cost of this can even result in a complete shutdown of the business."

The Gartner Cloud Prediction: One Third Of User Data In The Cloud

The Gartner Cloud Prediction

The Gartner Cloud Prediction

In a recent research study, Gartner speculated that the prevalent shift towards the cloud, primarily fuelled by the present-day end-user craving to store, share and access data on a multitude of devices, will lead to a jaw-dropping storage of an estimated one third of the total digital content onto the cloud some time by the end of 2016.

Gartner pointed out that user content transferred to the cloud in the year 2011 alone accounted for about 7 percent of the total. This, however, is estimated to increase to a hefty 36 percent by 2016.

Shalini Verma, chief research analyst at Gartner, rightly elaborated that consumers in the past have mainly made use of personal computers to store their digital content. With the arrival of a new era of technology, consumers are relying heavily on various other connected devices, the majority of which are fitted with cameras. All this adds up to a gigantic increment in the novel user-generated digital content that requires corresponding storage space. “With the emergence of the personal cloud, this fast-growing consumer digital content will quickly get disaggregated from connected devices,” she added.

The rapid endorsement of camera-fitted smartphones, tablets, music-players, hand-held game consoles and other state-of-the-art gadgetry by consumers has lead to an escalated capturing of photos and videos – plentiful digital content that requires storage. Gartner forecasts that the digital storage requisite will surpass the 330 exabytes recorded in 2011 to an unbelievable 4.1 zettabytes by 2016. This encompasses user content residing on personal computers, tablets, hard-disk drives, networked storage, cloud repositories and optical media.

Gartner explains that the overwhelming end-user digital storage requirement is likely to be met by social media networking sites such as Facebook and Google+, which offer ample storage space for hosting uploaded digital media without any monetary strings attached. The analytics giant declares that although online backup options are the most renowned cloud storage service providers, the storage space offered to consumers is comparatively small compared to that offered by social media ventures.

Gartner has shed light upon the increase in average storage per household in years to come. The figure is expected to rise from 464 gigabytes per household in 2011 to a mammoth 3.3 Terabytes by the end of 2016. Gartner considers camera-supported mobile gadget endorsement as the principal contributor to the mounting customer storage requirements.

The statistics revealed by Gartner are a clear indication of an ever-increasing end-user storage requirement, a requirement that is bound to serve as a driver of cloud adoption. All aboard the cloud express!
